The local authority in Söderhamn are planning to create a visitors centre for the local archipelago, a “skärgårdens hus”. Tovatt Architects and Planners were asked to make a proposal for this.
The building has a central location in the city next to the north edge of the river mouth of Söderhamnsån. The light industrial area where the building is situated is in need of regeneration. It is intended that the surrounding derelict buildings will have a future use connected to the archipelago. The centre will provide an information centre, exhibition space, aquarium, assembly hall and restaurant. The various functions can work independently or together under single management.
