Residential development 1400 units, schools and nursery.

2003-2005
Client: Stockholm city

In 2003 Erskine Tovatt Arkitekter succeeded in winning this international competition for a new housing area on the outskirts of Stockholm. Bounded by a major road link to the west and light industrial buildings to the east the integration of the site into the existing urban fabric has been a challenge. The proposal is built around a central woodland park based on an existing natural fauna. The proposal makes marked improvements to the local road immediately to the south and through a diagonal route across the central park links to a new open water area to the north of the site. This new water area links into the extensive water network around Stockholm. The proposal provides a total of 1400 units of varying size, 50% of which will be rental apartments and 50% for sale. A school for 450 students and 2 new nursery schools will be provided in the

area together with commercial space. Along with the proposed park facilities the area will be suitable for children and young families. The somewhat dense building form will be supported by the proposed tram connection to the local commuter station at Sundbyberg. The urban character of the proposal will make the area an attractive area for families to move to. An emphasis on the design of the public space and quality architecture are essential if this high-density development is to be attractive.
