In a so called “parallel sketch” – a very Swedish version of an invited architects competition - Tovatt Architects and Planners has developed a proposal for the future of the railway station area, located next to the historic centre of the city.
The Kalmar station area is one of the few places in the city centre where the access to the Baltic sea, the afternoon sun, and the natural landscape co-insist and meet up. The station area is a confluence of the historic city and the harbor as a whole is a sanctuary for an exciting urban development for many decades to come.
In our proposal, the station area has been given a strong urban identity. By moving the busses to the south and the east of the station, a new balance and dynamic will be created. The new buss square, framed by commercial premises and an enlarged guest harbor, a new hotel becomes acts as a springboard towards the east. The proposal connects Sylvanderparken with the city and important new sight lines can be achieved to the castle and its parkland beyond the estuary.
