The Art Centre lies in the beautiful landscape beside the Dalälven river close the Swedish town of Gävle. The individual buildings form a semi-circular court, which faces eastwards towards the river. The buildings are built of roughly sawn timber sections. The original sketch proposals for the project developed from dwellings similar to those used by the Lapp people of Northern Scandinavia. This idea has developed into architecture more reminiscent of North American Indians. The functions of the buildings vary, meeting hall dinning hall, buildings for working in and sleeping in. There are atelier and exhibition spaces. The architecture while harmonious is playful and opportunities exist to climb in the volumes both inside and out.
