To date some 300 units have been successfully built in phase 1 of the Greenwich Millennium Village. The project design is successful in creating a sense of place and community in a hostile environment. Those pioneers who originally moved into the first blocks of the phase 1 development enjoy the quality of the close proximity to the ecological park and its lake. The largest block facing the Thames provides maximises the exploitation of the land with the highest value due to its proximity to the River, while giving protection to the Northerly wind. These blocks enclose a semi private south facing courtyard, which conceals two storeys of car parking.

The Architectural expression of the phase can be characterised as robust and inviting, the external colours of the buildings provide a warm contrast to an otherwise somewhat grey environment. The form of the penthouse volumes perched high on the buildings provides an unusual and varied roofline. The phase when complete will provide in the region of 520 homes at a density of 220 units per hectare. Phase 1C will provide a further 246 units, these are presently subject to a detail planning application. (See Millennium Village).
