Borga fjäll hotel was designed by Ralph Erskine in 1948. This new and unique hotel is well known in the Scandinavian mountain region. The original building has undergone a number of renovations and extensions since the original building was completed. At the end of the 1990’s the hotel changed owner and the new owners were keen to realise the hotels potential. A design proposal was made to develop the listed building, re-establishing the buildings original qualities and developing new. Ralph Erskine was actively involved in the project some 52 years after the original building was completed. The proposal develops and applies the original theories of Ralph Erskine’s arctic building program. The building ‘shield’ to the cold northern winds is completed, creating a south facing protected courtyard from which the building is entered.
