The 17th century Axmar historic iron worksis situated by the coast on the county border between Gästrikland and Hälsingland. The ironwork stopped producing at the end of the 19th century and since then has been abandoned. In the 1990’s the works found new life in the establishment of a seafood restaurant situated in the old ‘slag’ building by the waters edge. The restaurant has been a great success with some 40 000 guests per year. The owners commissioned Erskine Tovatt Architects has made a feasibility proposal for a hotel and conference centre suitable for 150 guests. The concept is to provide a simple yet quality facilities with additional functions such as café, exhibition space, and other harbour activities.
